Effect of initial treatment on the structure and mechanical properties of medium carbon steel subjected to ECAP

  • Original language description

The present work deals with grain refinement of medium carbon steel AISI 1045 having different initial microstructure resulted from thermal and thermomechanical treatment (TM). The purpose of prior steel TM processing was to refine ferrite grains and modify coarse lamellae structure. The final grain refinement of steel microstructure was then accomplished during warm ECAP deformation at 400°C. Employment of this processing route resulted in extensive deformation of ferrite structure and cementate lamelae fragmentation in pearlite grains. In pearlite grains modification of cementite lamellae due to sfearing , bending, twisting and breaking was found efficient as ECAP straining increased. Processesof dynamic polygonization and recrystalization in deformed structure also contributed to submicrocrystalline grains structure formation also contributed to formation of submicrocrystalline grain structure formation inintesively deformed structure.
