Hardening of 100CrMnSi6-4 bearing steel after accelerated carbide spheroidisation and long-duration annealing

  • Original language description

Spheroidising is an important and time-demanding stage of the treatment of bearing steels. Research into the so-called accelerated carbide spheroidisation showed that it was possible to spheroidise lamellar pearlite by thermomechanical or thermal treatment within several minutes. Globular carbide particles and the grain size of the matrix after accelerated carbide spheroidisation are significantly smaller than after the conventional long-duration soft annealing. The martensitic structure after hardening is therefore finer as well. This proves that the microstructure and properties of the final hardened product depend on prior annealing. Finer carbides in the structure enhance hardness and dissolve more readily during austenitisation. Consequently, lower quenching temperature can be used and the energy required for the quenching process is reduced. The risk of residual stresses and distortion can be mitigated as well. The present experiment was devoted to accelerated carbide spheroidisation and subsequent hardening. The microstructure and properties after the accelerated treatment were compared with those after conventional long-duration treatment.
