OPTIMIZATION OF FILLER MATERIALS FOR LARGE FORGING DIES

  • Original language description

Repair welding is widely used for smaller dies where adequate conditions for making high-quality welds can be provided easily. With large dies, it is far more difficult to guarantee adequate conditions for the welding process, for instance by pre-heating the die. For this reason, repair welding is rarely carried out on large dies in practice. This paper gives a comparison of novel filler materials for rebuilding large forging dies. Experimental weld deposits were applied to a die segment made of DIN 1.2714 material. Wear tests of the deposits were carried out using the pin-on-disc method. The quality of welds was studied by metallographic observation. The results show that the proposed repair methodology is suitable for rebuilding large dies.
