Focus on poverty
Original language description
Most definitions of poverty relate it to material deprivation or to the lack of meeting basic human needs. What are basic human needs? Up to now, income and consumption levels have been the most commonly used indicators. Health, life expectancy, child mortality and access to drinking water also play important roles. Other characteristics of poverty include vulnerability, helplessness, exclusion, quality of the surrounding environment and a number of other non-economic subjective indicators. Poverty goeshand-in-hand with material deprivation, but its precise definition is hard to find. It is a subjective and locally specific condition and its perception can vary considerably between individuals. In practice, measuring poverty is of great importance andhas a real impact on the lives of many of the world´s inhabitants.
