A LONG-TERM FOLLOW-UP OF PATIENTS WITH RECURRING SPORADIC POLYPS: IS THERE A BENEFIT FROM MUTATION TESTING OF ADENOMATOUS TISSUE?

  • Original language description

Most sporadic colorectal cancers (CRC) develop over a period of time from adenomatous polyps. The malignant transformation process from normal to cancerous tissue is accompanied by a veriety of changes on genetic and epigenetic levels. Recurring adenomas, which develop over time after the initial polypectomy, are frequent in some patients, hence posing risk for colorectal cancer development following a screening colonoscopy. Main objective of this study was a decade-long observation of patients after initial removal of adenomatous polyp(s), mainly in search for presence of recurrent adenomas. Another goal was to study the genetic profile of the most common somatic DNA mutations and their possible relation to adenoma recurrence potential.
