The Surrealist Movement in Egypt in the 1930s and the 1940s
Original language description
The purpose of this article is to define the nature, history, and scope of the Surrealist mode in Egypt in the 1930s and the 1940s, and its influence on the contemporary Egyptian art. It is also supposed to provide a clear, accessible, and broad information about a diverse group of mainstream and lesser-known innovative Arabic artists, and show that Surrealism isn´t only a European phenomenon. The article deals with the general state of the Egyptian art in the 1930s, with the genesis of the Egyptian Surrealist group Art and Liberty, its exhibitions, political activities, and two main members - Georges Hénein and Ramsis Yunana.
