The United States and the European integration - The position of the Obama administration towards the new institutional framework of the Common Foreign and Security Policy of the European Union

  • Original language description

The aim of this study is to establish what is the position of the current administration of President Barack Obama towards the current stage of the integration in the European Union. To this end this study firstly provides an overview of the debate of experts in the United States over the implications of the coming into force of the Lisbon treaty and establishes that one group of experts stresses its benefits for the United States (the ?US Eurooptimist? position) and the other group considers it to be to the detriment of the interests of the United States (the ?US Eurosceptics? position). The study than examines the public declarations of President Obama and scrutinizes in several detailed case studies to which extent the Obama administration adopted diplomacy actions in support of its declared position that were suggested by important experts. The case studies indicate a moderate tendency of the Obama administration to follow suggestions of the ?US Eurooptimist? experts.
