Turkey as an Important Energy Hub on the East ? West Route
Original language description
The article deals with the issue of Turkey as an increasingly significant transit hub on the East-West route, supplying the oil and natural gas resources of the Caspian Sea basin to the world markets in general and Europe in particular. It identifies themilestones of energy security-related policies that have recently catapulted Ankara into its current standing of a bridge between the key oil and natural gas producers in the post-Soviet space, including Russia, Azerbaijan, prospectively also Turkmenistan and Kazakhstan on the one hand, and European customers on the other hand. The role of Turkey as a key transit country is scrutinized both in the context of its internal politics reflecting on the current government's efforts to turn Turkey into a keyplayer in the region, and the evolution of (geo)economic issues in the Mediterranean-Caspian-Persian Gulf macro region with implications for North Atlantic energy security.
