South China Sea Dispute In International Relations
Original language description
The South China Sea dispute has become one of the most followed and analyzed topics in the last decade. It is considered a ?flashpoint?, ?hot spot?, and/or ?dangerous ground? of Southeast Asia. The South China Sea provides food and employment for the populations of the neighboring littoral countries, as its waters are rich in fauna and abound in tropical fish. The sea is also perceived as an important source of hydrocarbons, such as oil and natural gas, turning the dispute into a ?scramble for resources? among China, claiming all of the area, and most Southeast Asian states. Its strategic importance also stems from the fact that it represents a vital passageway between Europe and Asia as well as a transport route for oil and gas from the Persian Gulf to Northeast Asia. As such it is in focus of international relations of world powers as well as of littoral states. The objective of this publication is to provide a brief introduction of the dispute in the South China Sea, and to cover it
