The conference was opened with a keynote address entitled Private Security Studies: The Strange Story of the Establishment of an Academic Field delivered by Anna Leander (Copenhagen Business School). The subsequent 14 presentations delivered by scholars coming from European as well as non-European countries probed both the challenges and opportunities related to privatization of security broadly speaking. In addition to presentations examining the numerous issues concerning the activities of private military and/or security companies (PMSCs), there were also be presentations that widen the existing debates on security privatization by looking at how and why an increasing number of private actors beyond PMSCs have to perform various security related functions.
