The chapter examines the contestation over the meaning of development and modernity in the rural area under study. The goal is to identify neoliberal elements encountered in the local area and find out who promotes/opposes them, and how is this neoliberalisation, through the post-socialist discourse of development and modernity, negotiated and accepted by different actors and subjects. The key research question is to what extent the socialist past affects ongoing processes and practices related to development through tourism, and how new developmental activities are affected by the legacy of socialism
