The International Conference, organized by the Iberoameric Center of the Metropolitan University in Prague, in collaboration with the Department of Portuguese Studies of the Institute of Romance Studies and the KREAS project at Charles University in Prague, focused on the analysis of the discourse on modernity and modernization in the Iberoameric political and cultural space. It questioned the extent to which the ideas of modernity are present in historical, but also current, political and cultural debates in the region. Is it possible to talk about a specifically Hispanic or Brazilian way of modernity? Or can the idea of ​​modernity be regarded rather as an external element that has taken place here because of the colonial and postcolonial situation of this region?
