Event of Signature. Jacques Derrida and Repeating the Unrepeatable
Original language description
This monograph focuses on the triple aporias of a legal use of handwritten signature. Following Derrida's deconstruction, I attempt to rethink three metaphysical expectations of legal handwritten signature that are shared by the discourses of graphology and forensic analysis. The first metaphysical expectation is that it is possible to recognize the signer after her signature: a signature is understood as displaying the same "natural qualities" as the signer herself. The second metaphysical expectation is that it is possible to verify an authentic trace: a signature is taken as proof of contact between the signed document and the writing instrument held in the signer's hand. The third metaphysical expectation is the possibility of perpetual manual reproduction: a handwritten signature is considered to be a personal idiom, which guarantees the signer's legal identity. By understanding the triple metaphysical expectations as triple aporias situated in the gap between life and law-namely, aporias of "natural" resemblance, of "authentic" tracing, and of "identical" repetition-the book offers a complex answer to the question of why handwritten signature are expected to repeat the unrepeatable event of writing.
