The Persistence of Nationalism in the Czech Republic

  • Original language description

This paper aims to explain the persistence of nationalism in the Czech Republic and its political consequences. I argue (a) that the persistence can be interpreted as a matter of culture and cultural history is thus capable of explaining this phenomenon over various historical periods-from the 19th century, over the communist dictatorship to the present time; (b) that narrowly defined culture in the form of folk art, literature and science carried nationalistic features and developed into commonly shared values, habits, attitudes, i.e. broadly defined culture; and (c) that these shared values contain common understandings of various political concepts, such as democracy, state, etc., and if the formal institutions are to be aligned with the culture, they should also bear these specific cultural features. This brings political consequences which are addressed in the second half of the paper.
