Heritage and Identity of Central and Eastern Europe - definition and identification attempt. Another Europe ... But Europe. Central Europe in the European Architecture
Original language description
The auto- and hetero-stereotypes regarding the Central Europe often differ, but they are growing from similar narratives and labels. Usually, the region is reflected as the semi-periphery of the (Western) Europe, as the bridge, or as the buffer zone. All these perspectives indicate some transitive, unfinished, uncomplete situation including the uncertainty regarding the region's borders; and also the subordinated position of Central Europe towards one (West) or even two (West and East) main European macro-region(s). In our analysis we focus on the legacies related with such portrayal of Central Europe producing specific auto-stereotypes in the region. Later, we illustrate these contrary auto-stereotypes presenting the Central Europe as specific and discrete European region and search for unique characteristics (the shared legacies, or heritage) of Central Europe. We presuppose that such uniqueness is mainly related with the situation of small nations and general plurality of nations, cultures and values at the relatively small territory, as well as with the permanent search for the "independent" position within the European (geo)political and cultural architecture.
