Religion and Nationalism in a Post-Secular World
Original language description
The chapter will explore the global resurgence of nativist politics in the post-secular age and show how this resurgence is linked to the global rise of the political relevance of religion. The study will show that there are two basic versions of this resurgence, both of which have strong connections to religion and the role religion again plays in global politics: One is based on a revival of the nationalism of old, which often bears religious undertones, especially in those contexts where religion played a role in the constitution of the nation in the past. The other is based on the political attractiveness of the civilizationist argument. Here, nationalism is expanded and redefined as a broader community of values, whereby these values are typically derived from the religious roots of the alleged civilization. While these approaches can be easily challenged academically, they both constitute strikingly successful political strategies, and thus, the bond between religion and nationalism is likely to remain a widely present feature of global politics.
