Original language description
This chapter examines the evolution of clientelism and corruption in the Czech Republic in the aftermath of the post-communist transition. It argues that the rapid shift from authoritarianism to democracy enabled both former regime elites and emerging business actors to capture political parties "from above" and "from below," creating entrenched clientelist networks. The collapse of traditional parties in the 2010s gave rise to a new generation of anti-establishment movements, notably ANO, STAN, the Pirates, and SPD. While these parties positioned themselves as anti-corruption forces, they often reproduced or reshaped informal power structures. ANO, as a business-firm party led by Andrej Babiš, introduced oligarchic elements into clientelism, while STAN's involvement in the "Dozimetr" scandal highlighted persistent ties between local politics, business, and corruption. The analysis concludes that rather than dismantling clientelism, the new party system has modified it, shifting its forms and reinforcing the risks of state and party capture on both national and local levels.
