This chapter examines popular Czech disco films of the 1980s, which were the culmination of the disco craze that took hold in Czechoslovakia in the 1970s and 1980s. It explores the form and role that disco music took in late socialist society: transplanted far from its roots, the local offshoot of the genre became the ideal music to cater to the requirements of the communist authorities—to supervise, educate, and entertain young people. Originally, disco became popular among young people who craved Western pop music. The local version was embraced as a fresh genre that had the potential to revive the declining local pop scene. However, in the 1980s, authorities began incorporating it into official celebrations and anniversaries for young people. This shift is reflected in the films of the era that address the youth issues. Once the soundtrack for the lives of disillusioned rebels without a cause in Vítr v kapse (Wind in the Pocket, 1982) and the accompaniment to the high life of delinquents in Láska z pasáže (Love in the Arcade, 1984), disco eventually became an optimistic expression of the joyful days and promising future that await young people in a socialist society in Discopříběh (Disco Story, 1987). Czechoslovakian disco later became a despised emblem of the entire late socialist period, an association that local disco and its performers retain despite the genre’s enduring, nostalgia-driven popularity.
