Destruction of radioactive organic waste and recovery of uranium from lignites using molten salt oxidation
Original language description
Proceedings of NUCAR 2011: 10. symposium on nuclear and radiochemistry, Visakhapatnam (India), 22-26 Feb 2011. Molten salt oxidation (MSO) is being studied for the safe and effective destruction of organic components of radioactive waste and for the recovery of uranium from low-grade lignite ores. The work involves a laboratory-scale MSO system where solid or liquid material is injected into a bed of molten carbonate salt in the presence of an oxidizing gas. The relatively simple MSO process completelydestroys organic compounds, and the carbonate salt neutralizes generated acid gases and retains the radioactivity. Previous work on MSO will be reviewed and recent experiments with the destruction of radioactive waste oils and ion exchange resins will bepresented along with new work on the recovery of uranium from lignite ores using MSO.
