Seismic qualification
Original language description
Within the seismic section of the EQ program, all safety-related equipment must prove its seismic adequacy to withstand the effects of the earthquake corresponding to the maximum design earthquake (SSE, S2, SL-2 ? probability under 10-4 per year). One part of the seismic adequacy verification is the demonstration that the equipment is capable to withstand the cumulative degradation effect of several project design earthquakes (OBE, S1, SL-1 ? probability under 10-2 per year), which must not affect the resistance of the equipment to the impact of the maximum design earthquake (SSE, S2, SL-2). Some countries require the test of accident of external origin (AEO, e.g. air plane crash or shock wave). AEO test is carried out additionally after verification of seismic resistance.
