Utilization of reverse osmosis in boric acid management of nuclear power plants
Original language description
Poster at 3rd International Conference on Chemical Technology. In this paper, we present our work focused on utilization of RO for the treatment of boric acid solutions at NPPs. We performed experiments with RO membranes of various manufacturers and in a wide range of operation conditions (boric acid concentration, pH, temperature, recovery, total feed flow). The arrangement of experiments was semi-batch (retentate was returned back to the feed solution reservoir, in which boric acid solution was concentrated) and continuous (both permeate and retentate were drained). The experiments were performed at lab scale with RO modules 2540 (2.5 inch in diameter and 40.0 inch in length) and at pilot plant scale with RO modules 4040 (4.0 inch in diameter and 40.0 inch in length. The experimental results suggest that it is possible to utilize RO for the treatment of boric acid solutions with certain modifications in solution chemistry. Based on the obtained results, we suggested the configuration of and the operational conditions for a RO unit at NPPs.
