The MIND (Microbiology In Nuclear waste Disposal) project is focused on microbial processes in the geological disposal of intermediate and high level radioactive wastes. The objectives of this project will increase the understanding of how life processes will influence the safety and performance of future repositories. Research Centre Rez in cooperation with the Technical University of Liberec participate in WP1 (Improving the geological safety case knowledge of the behavior of organic containing long-lived ILW) and WP2 (Improving the safety case knowledge base of HLW). The experiments focused on microbially induced corrosion of canisters, the effect of irradiation on bacteria and polymers and effect of radionuclides on bacteria are running at this time. This report summarizes these experiments and their actual results. Our contribution to MIND project is supported by experimental equipment – anaerobic glove boxes, which enable long-term to simulate anaerobic condition presumed in the deep geological repository after a certain time horizon.
