Innovative mechanical and microstructural testing of irradiated materials in hot cells

  • Original language description

Mechanical testing of the materials used in the nuclear power plants (NPP) components is very important for the construction, mitigation and repair processes. Recently, a wide variety of testing techniques is established according to the industry needs. However, new materials and manufacturing techniques lead to a developing of new components with complex shapes or/and with advanced surfaces. Thus, new innovative techniques should be developed to fulfil requirements and to obtain relevant results. Moreover, the study of irradiated materials is even more challenging due to the limited access to the sample and a need of the shielding to protect the operator against the radiation effect. Currently, the new hot cells facility for the irradiated samples investigation has been built in Czech Republic and allows to perform mechanical and microstructural analysis of a wide spectrum of materials and specimens’ shapes. Innovative ideas including sample holders design and manipulation techniques are developing (Fig. 1) in CVR. This work describes a state of the art in mechanical testing techniques and gives a description of the innovations already proposed by CVR in the materials research field.
