Fluoride volatility method for partitioning of special types of used (spent) nuclear fuels
Original language description
Fluoride volatility method is a partitioning technology based on direct fluorination of spent nuclear fuel by fluorine gas and the separation of volatile products from non-volatile products. The technology is proposed for special types of used nuclear fuels, which cannot be effectively reprocessed by classical hydrometallurgical processes due to the short cooling time, high content of plutonium or limited solubility in nitric acid. The other use of Fluoride volatility method is for processing of damaged fuels or fuel debris when the nuclear fuel is mixed with oxidized cladding material and is not soluble in inorganic acids. This was the case of presented experimental verification of the method in 2017 and 2018.

Technical parameters
The main aim of the work described in the report CVR-1965 is verification and description of partitioning technique based on fluoride volatility method which could be applied for Fukushima fuel debris to partition volatile actinides from reactor structural material scraps represented mainly by iron and oxidized zirconium. The experimental study described in this report was aimed on preparation of simulated nuclear fuel samples consisted from UO2, PuO2 , Fe , Fe2O3 , Stainless steel and ZrO2 mixtures and subsequent fluorination of these samples directed to separation of volatile UF6 and PuF6 from non-volatile fluorides of FeF3 and ZrF4. The results of the fluorination tests will be complemented by series of chemical analyses of input material and products.
