Study of reflection properties of silica sand
Original language description
This paper is focused on validation of silica sand cross sections in set of experiments focused on neutron reflection properties. The experiments were realized in well-defined core of LR-0 reactor. The well description of core, especially of used fuel, ensures that possible discrepancies, if any, can be accounted to description of sand. The tests using graphite and water reflector were realized, so as they could be compared as well. These two materials have been used because one can assume their neutronic properties are well known, while in silicon new evaluation capture of cross section has been performed. Silica sand is a fundamental material for concrete which can be used for shielding, mostly for gamma ray and neutrons. Concrete is the basic building substance of nuclear industry. Properties of concrete may vary depending on its composition, but very often more than 50 % of concrete is sand [1]. Silica sand as a part of concrete is very important not only for shielding, but for criticality safety in long-term storage of spent fuel. For the construction of new nuclear facilities, the consumption of concrete is very high, so it should be used as efficiently as possible. For space applications silica sand cross section is important due to safety calculations of possible accidents or landing on sand bedrock. Due to these reasons we need very accurate computing codes with verified and accurate nuclear data libraries. This paper explained several experiments with sand which were performed in research reactor LR-0.
