Prompt gamma measurement from the manganese sulphate bath

  • Original language description

Prompt gamma activation analysis (PGAA) using neutron capture is a widely applicable non-destructive nuclear method in the measurement of elements that do not form neutron capture products with delayed emissions of gamma rays. Inaccurate and incomplete data have been a significant drawback in the calculations of gamma spectra in current nuclear data libraries [1]. Currently, there is a lack of reliable experiments focusing on the measurement of prompt gamma produced during neutron interactions. The prompt gamma radiation has a negative effect on the long-term operation of power reactors [2]. However; it also has a wide range of applications such as space exploration [3,4], geological exploration [5], or hazardous material detection [6,7].  The presented paper focuses on the validation of the measured gamma leakage spectrum from a manganese sulphate bath using a standard 252 Cf neutron source. The gamma spectrum was measured using a stilbene  scintillation detector. The experimental data were compared with calculations by means of MCNP6.2 [8] using ENDF/B-V [9], ENDF/B-VI [10], ENDF/B-VII.0 [11], ENDF/B-VIII.0 [12], JEFF-3.3 [13], TENDL-2019 [14] nuclear data libraries and INDEN evaluation of gamma production for 55 Mn [15].  This paper is an extension of a previous study [16], where the gamma spectrum was also measured using the HPGe detector.
