Design of Experimental Methods for Investigating Corium Properties and Behavior

  • Original language description

To gain an understanding of severe nuclear accidents (SA), it is essential to determine the material properties of the molten core (corium) under these extreme conditions. Density is one of these essential parameters for severe nuclear accident research. However, these material data cannot be obtained theoretically; scientists must measure them experimentally. Therefore, in this study, we developed a new method for determining the corium density using induction skull melting at temperatures above 2000 °C. To verify the method, we conducted experiments with non-radioactive corium simulants. Based on the data availability from the literature, we chose mixtures of ZrO2 and Al2O3 in three weight ratios. Experimental results from this study are in good agreement with previously published findings. Hence, this method may refine data for different scenarios and reactors. The method is currently used to obtain Temelin Nuclear Power Plant (NPP) prototypic corium data for the hypothetic Station Black-Out (SBO) scenario to improve the accuracy of SA calculations.
