Toward an alternative fuel assembly design for LVR-15 reactor
Original language description
H2020 European LEU-FOREvER Project (2017-2021) aimed to foster the development of a sustainable Low Enriched Uranium (LEU) based fuel cycle for the European research reactors. In order to achieve this goal, it involved major actors of the European community. Currently, some European Research Reactors adopt an original Soviet designed fuel (currently manufactured in the Russian Federation): this situation is identified as a potential limit to their sustainability. Thus, the LEU-FOREvER project has selected the Czech LVR-15 reactor to demonstrate the feasibility of an alternative supplier. After a short summary of the project goals and the steps done to achieve them, this paper describes the final steps planned and achieved, in particular the irradiation in the LVR-15 reactor and the post irradiation inspection after the first four irradiation cycles. The tests performed in CVR show that the fuel assembly fully fulfilled the expectations of the stakeholders.
