ACES WP5: Post-irradiation characterization of High-dose aggregate samples using light optical and electron microscopy techniques

  • Original language description

The irradiation of aggregate discs specimens was done in the LVR-15 test reactor in Research Centre Řež. Neutron fluence accumulated in the samples was calculated from the individual fluxes and the reactor operation history. The obtained average neutron fluence for the High dose samples was 1.83E+19 n/cm2 (>1 MeV), the irradiation temperature during the three irradiation cycles did not exceed 57 °C. Post-irradiation examinations of irradiated discs, carried out in Hot Cell facility in CVR, included photographic record using light optical microscope, dedicated sample preparation for scanning electron microscopy and SEM-EDX analysis of prepared specimens. The main aim of the characterization was to provide additional information about the aggregate damage due to neutron irradiation, which can be observed on a micro-scale. Observed phenomena can have a direct impact on the physical and mechanical properties of aggregates and can help explain measurable volumetric changes, changes in relative dynamic modulus and compressive strength.
