Original language description
Microbially influenced corrosion (MIC) is a form of corrosion that may limit the lifetime of nuclear waste canisters in long term. Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) represent an excellent method for investigation the impact of microorganisms on corrosion behavior in long-term monitoring studies. EIS measurements from a long-term study on carbon steel corrosion in deep natural groundwater containing sulfate-reducing bacteria illustrate the impact microbial activity on the corrosion processes in the impedance data. Measurement of EIS shows the evolution of three time constant under abiotic conditions, in connection with the formation of two layers of biofilms.
