The cholesterol-lowering effect of bovine colostrum containing synbiotics in rats fed on a cholesterol-enriched diet
Original language description
Hypocholesterolemic effects of fermented bovine colostrum by Enterococcus faecium CCDM 922 and Lactobacillus acidophilus CCDM 406 on Prague hereditary hypercholesterolemic rats (PHHC) were assessed in present study. Thirty-six female and male PHHC rats were divided into five groups as follows: (I) control group A, fed high fat diet; (II) control group B, fed high fat diet supplemented with milk; (III) group C, fed high fat diet supplemented with bovine colostrum (IV) group D, fed high fat diet supplemented with fermented synbiotic colostrum, and (V) group E, fed high fat diet supplemented with fermented synbiotic milk. After 8 weeks, fractions and subfractions of cholesterol were measured in blood serum using Lipoprint® Lipoprotein Subfractions Testing System™. Hepatic and cardiac triacylglycerols (TAG) were determined enzymatically using commercial test kits. The group C and D had significantly increased levels of high-density lipoprotein (HDL) than both control groups. Bovine colostrum had also the most positive (decreasing) effect on hepatic TAG concentrations in female rats. Our results indicate that bovine colostrum or its combination with synbiotics may have the potential for decreasing the risk of cardiovascular diseases.
