LUDVIKOVA, M. et al., 2025. Transgenesis in pea (Pisum sativum L.) and flax (Linum usitatissimum L.): Agritec‘s experience. New Biotechnology. Vol. 85, 186–186. DOI 10.1016/j.nbt.2024.08.273. Web of Science ID: WOS:001541069800005. Agritec Ltd. is a Czech company with almost 20 years of experience with transgenic research in pea (Pisum sativum L.) and flax (Linum usitatissimum L.). It was the first and the only institution in Europe which performed official field trials with GM peas. The pea lines were transformed with various genes of interest (e.g. coat proteins of Pea enation mosaic virus and Pea seed-borne mosaic virus for activation of resistance by post-transcriptional gene silencing; or serine protease inhibitor from the wax moth to induce resistance to insect pests). In addition to field trials, GM pea lines have also been used for rat feeding studies. GM flax expressing the fusion of the alpha-domain of mammalian metallothionein 1a was created in Agritec Ltd. The modified plants had an improved ability to grow in contaminated soil, extract heavy metals and accumulate them within the plant biomass, so they can be used for reclamation and phytoremediation of heavy metal strained soil. While the first laboratory and field tests had been connected with Cd, recent research was extended to other metals/ metalloids (Pb, As, Se). Field trial with GM flax lines were carried out for a total of 10 years. Our current work is focused on the development of pea breeding lines with low phytic acid content using constructs suitable for CRISPR/Cas9 genome editing technology targeting a different regions of myo-inositol-3-phosphate synthase gene. Floral dip transformation approach has been tested in pea recently as a possible simplification of standard transformation protocol.
