Effect of body condition score on oocyte yield and in vitro embryo development
Original language description
Environmemtal influences, such as chronic and acute changes in dietary intake and body composition can have a profound effect on fertility and, specifically, ovarian function in all mammalian species. Therefore, the relationships between nutrition and reproduction in cattle have been extensively studied. The aim of our study was to evaluate the influence of body condition score (BCS) on oocyte yield and embryo development in vitro. Each of 163 dairy cows used as a source of ovaries, were given a BCS using a scale of 1 (emaciated) to 5 (obese) before slaugther and a total of 326 ovaries from cows with BCS 1 - 4 were collected. The ovarian characteristics: the mean number of follicles, yield and quality of oocytes as well as embryo development were evaluated. The mean number of follicles per ovary was significantly lowest (P<0.001) in the BCS 4 (5.19 ? 1.24) compared to BCS 1(13.33 ? 1.31), BCS 2 (15.33 ? 2.06) and BCS 3 (18.04 ? 2.66) respectively. The quality of oocytes (maturation gra
