Effect of cutting frequency on species richness and dry matter yield of permanent grassland after grazing cessation
Original language description
The effect of cessation of grazing management has been only rarely investigated. The influence of cutting regime with absence of fertilization was studied during 2005–2011 on a semi-natural grassland that was grazed for more than 30 years before the experiment started. The trial was arranged in a randomized plot design of treatments: 4C – intensive (four cuts per year); 3C – medium intensive (three cuts per year); 2C – low intensive (two cuts per year); 1C – extensive (one cut per year); 0C – abandoned (control; without any management). Species richness significantly decreased in treatments 1C and 0C, where dominance of tall grasses (Poa pratensis, Dactylis glomerata, Elytrigia repens) was significantly higher. In contrast, 3C and 4C treatments increased dominance of forbs with ground rosette. Both management and year significantly influenced botanical composition similarly and explained 23 % of its variability. Dry matter yields were found to be lower in three-cut than in two-cut treatments (5.56 t/ha and 6.22 t/ha, respectively). In case of grazing management cessation a suitable compromise of three cuts per year could be recommended which can guarantee maintenance of species richness, botanical composition and appropriate grass forage yield.
