The impact of supplementing plant tannin extracts on the milk yield and milk quality of lactating dairy cows

  • Original language description

Poster at 5th International Multidisciplinary Conference for Young Researchers "Resilience the face of Global Changes" 3.-4. 10. 2024, Prague, Czech Republic. Tannins are secondary plant compounds that have been proposed in the literature as a source of undegraded by-pass protein for ruminants, which can positively impact the milk production of dairy cattle. The present study aims to investigate the effect of plant tannins dietary inclusion on the milk yield and milk quality of cows. For these purposes, twenty Holstein cows in mid-lactation were used in this study. Animals were divided into two groups: the control group, which was fed the total mixed ration (TMR) diet consisting of maize silage, clover-grass silage, hay, straw, and grain concentrate with mineral and vitamin supplements, and the experimental group, which was fed TMR enriched with 17,2 g/animal/day of chestnut tannin extract and 17,2 g/animal/day of Quebracho tannin extract. Milk yield was recorded on the days 1, 5, 10, 15, and 20 day of the experiment. Milk samples for analyses of milk quality parameters were collected from each cow on the day 5 and day 20. Results obtained in this study didn’t confirm hypothesis regarding the improvement of milk production of cows after tannin extracts supplementation, which might be caused by many factors, e.g., seasoning, the composition of the basal diet, dosage and type of tannins used in the study. Thus, conduction of further research in this filed are recommended to evaluate the impact of tannin extracts on the milk production of dairy cattle.
