Many countries of the European Union have introduced taxation of road motor vehicles based on CO2 emission levels. The Czech system of taxation of road motor vehicles does not use many environmental aspects. Although transport significantly contributes to economic growth and overall economic and related social prosperity, it also brings about undesirable impacts affecting not only the natural environment but also health of population. Mass production of CO2 emissions, attributed a serious impact on global warming, is one of the problems. Transport is considered to be a large producer of CO2, but despite this fact, the CzechRepublic does not use the CO2 emission levels as a criterion for tax assessment. Several countries of the European Union have introduced taxation of road motor vehicles according to CO2 emissions and the European Union intends to exert pressure on the member states to address the issue.
