Vitamin D substitution dose in IBD patients: Higher than recommended?
Original language description
An increasing body of literature supports the important role of vitamin D (vitD) in the inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). VitD deficiency (25-OHD3 < 75 nmol/l) is common in European population. Prevalence of vitD deficiency in IBD patients appears to be at least comparable, with similar seasonal variation. The ECCO Statement suggest vitD substitution for patients with osteoporosis and/or on steroids (doses 800–1000 IU/day). No other recommendation are available. What is the real daily vitD requirement in IBD patients is not known. The aim of this work was to determine the substitution dose of the vitD required to maintain sustained blood level.
