Effect of a Walking Intervention on Functional Capacity in Patients With Chronic Heart Failure With Reduced Ejection Fraction: The WATCHFUL Trial

  • Original language description

The WATCHFUL study was a six‑month multicenter randomized controlled trial evaluating the effect of a lifestyle walking intervention in patients with heart failure with reduced ejection fraction (HFrEF). The intervention group used a Garmin vívofit activity tracker and received regular telephone counseling focused on behavior‑change techniques, while the control group continued usual care. The primary outcome was the change in the six‑minute walk test (6MWT) distance. Although the intervention group significantly increased daily step counts and minutes of moderate‑to‑vigorous physical activity, no improvement in functional capacity or other secondary outcomes was observed. The findings highlight the need for further research to understand the disconnect between increased physical activity and functional outcomes in HFrEF patients.
