Sport, Sports Betting, and Gambling from the Perspective of University Students: Case of the Czech Republic

Original language description

This study examines the relationship between sport, fixed-odds sports betting, and gambling among university students in the Czech Republic. Using an anonymous structured questionnaire, the authors analysed two groups of respondents: students with prior experience of sports betting (N = 391) and those without such experience (N = 679). The study assessed associations between participation in sports betting and biological age, gender, and type of faculty attended, and identified the most frequently preferred sports for betting. The findings indicate that biological age does not significantly affect participation in sports betting, whereas both gender and faculty type are significantly associated with betting experience. Football was the most frequently preferred sport for betting, followed by ice hockey and tennis. The study highlights sports betting as a prevalent form of gambling among young adults, particularly men, and underscores the need for preventive and intervention programmes in the fields of addiction medicine and public health targeting university students at risk of gambling-related harm.
