Novel methods for souslik research and conservation in the Czech Republic
Original language description
The European ground squirrel or souslik (Spermophilus citellus) is a rodent endemic to central and southeastern Europe. Its populations are fragmented adn in serious decline and, as such, it is currently listed as vulnerable in the IUCN Red List and critically endangered in the Czech Republic. Our group is focusing on its research and conservation efforts in Southern Moravia. During four years we have implemented a number of measures with the aims of updating the regional demographic (litter size, survival, densities, dispersal), distribution of knowledge of the species and to support the existent populations through public awareness and environmental education. Here we will present these research techniques and conservation measures and discuss their effectiveness and preliminary results.
