Glycol based heat-transfer fluid demineralization by electrodialysis

  • Original language description

Electrodialysis (ED) was tested to recover glycol-based chemicals from waste water. Such waste streams originate from heat-transfer liquids, natural gas drying liquid, aircraft deicing fluids or engine coolants. The majority of antifreeze liquids are based on monoethylene glycol and/or propylene glycol. Chemical additives, as well as products of corrosion and glycol degradation were successfully removed by a combination of microfiltration and electrodialysis, using heterogeneous Ralex? anion-exchange AM-PP and cation-exchange CM-PP membranes. The tested solution was a real waste heat-transfer liquid from central heating system. A desalination degree of 88 % was achieved on a pilot unit P1 EDR-Y by MemBrain s.r.o. The total of ten batches of purified glycol solution was produced by treating total mass 919 kg of ED feed, confirming the stability of the ED process, including polarity reversal and chemical cleaning. ED was found to be an effective technology for purification of waste mixed
