Electrochemical characterization of bipolar membranes

The bipolar membrane used in the study was produced by MemBrain s.r.o. Relation of the limiting current density and transition times (τ_1 andτ_2) with selectivity of the membrane was studied using current voltage curve (CVC) and chronopotentiometry. Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy was used to differentiate the ohmic resistance of the membrane layers and that of bipolar region whose resistance is due to the concentration gradient caused by water dissociation. Dependence of the bipolar region resistance at different applied currents was investigated to get insight about the reactions take place in bipolar region. Energy efficiency of the bipolar membrane was investigated with electrodialysis experiment
