Study on electrodeionization with ion-exchange microgranulate in the diluting chamber

  • Original language description

Pellets made of a blend of ground ion-exchange resin and polyethylene binder were tested as a filler material in the diluting chambers of an electrodeionization stack. The results obtained were compared with the conventional processes of electrodialysis and electrodeionization. It has been found the presented modification of the electrodeionization process cannot compete with both the conventional electrodialysis and electrodeionization processes. The poor performance of such a design is mainly due to the chosen shape of the pellets (cylinder) and their poor electrochemical properties. When operated at the same voltage per cell pair, conventional electrodeionization has been shown to be more efficient than electrodialysis in the range of electrolyte concentrations less than 0.5 – 1.5 kg m-3. Since the voltage in industrial-scale electrodialysis stacks is limited due to concentration polarization or burning phenomena, typically to 1 – 1.5 V/cell pair, while electrodeionization stacks may be operated at a higher voltage without any problems, electrodeionization has been found more efficient in the whole studied electrolyte concentration range of 0 – 3.5 kg m-3.
