Cation-exchange heterogeneous membranes based on emulsion copolymers
Original language description
Most commercial membranes are prepared from basic commercially accessible ion exchange resin and some kind of polymer matrix. This study tries to use as matrix emulsion copolymers that are quite suitable for preparation of membranes during low temperatures. The technology is simple, yet effective. The ion-exchange resin is mixed with emulsion copolymers during the room temperature till homogeneous constitution, then spread on a silicon base and let for 48 hours so that the water can be evaporated. Membrane is then ready. Another pro of emulsion copolymers is their chemical and physical versatility caused by wide variety of base monomers. Ion-exchange, separation and application properties were tested on membranes prepared by mixing cation-exchange resin and polymer matrix based on emulsion copolymers. Main evaluation points were dimensional stability in water, water absorption, ion-exchange capacity, permselectivity and specific and areal resistance.
