Measurement of hydraulic characteristics of different electrodialysis modules
Original language description
The objective of this project was to measure hydraulic characteristics of various pilot electrodialysis modules and to analyze these data. There were assembled eight modules with different amount of membrane cells and different types of spacers. To measure their hydraulic characteristics, it was used a unit in which four experiments were accomplished using tap water: measurement of pressure drops between an inlet and an outlet flow, measurement of pressure difference between two different inlet flows, measurement of internal leakages and measurement of external leakages. Pressure drop was measured in the range of linear flow velocities 2.5 – 10.5 cm s-1. Pressure difference between two inlet flows was measured in order to check the correctness of module assembling as this difference should be as low as possible. When measuring internal leakages, only one module circuit was connected to water circulation (linear flow velocity 1 cm s-1) and the other circuits remained disconnected. The rate of internal leakages was set as the amount of water leaking from disconnected circuits per unit of time. External leakages from membrane stack were measured at three pressures – 1.5, 2.0 and 2.5 bar. The obtained results showed that both, number of membrane cells and type of spacers (material, net type, design of distribution channels) influenced hydraulic characteristics of the modules. Even some data were inconclusive, most of them are important in developing new electrodialysis modules for specific processes.
