Study on chemical and thermal stability of ion exchange membranes

  • Original language description

As ion exchange membranes (IEMs) are operated in different conditions and environments, their properties deteriorate in time. Understanding the degradation pathways is thus important for adjusting the operational conditions. The objective of this work was to study the behaviour of heterogeneous anion and cation exchange membranes (AEMs, CEMs) exposed to NaOH, HNO3 and demineralised water at 80 °C for 30 days. During the ageing period, samples were taken and their changes were evaluated as changes in areal and specific resistance and permselectivity. We also try to utilize ATR-FTIR to evaluate changes in chemical structure. As a main mechanism of degradation we determined the mechanical and chemical stress of polymer binder. At the most damaged sample, the AEM exhibited 30 days in HNO3 at 80 °C, structure was totally disintegrated which led to its cracking. In other samples we expect smaller changes in the structure, but from the decline of resistance and permselelctivity it is obvious, that in IEMs the origin and spread of micro pores, voids and ruptures took place. In the case of heterogeneous IEMs, only polyethylene binder was clearly identified from the FTIR spectra. The spectra of a new and loaded CEMs were equal, whereas the spectra of loaded AEMs showed some new absorption bands. However these changes were not assigned to the decomposition of quaternary ammonium functional groups
