Salts mixture conversion by bipolar electrodialysis
Original language description
Electrodialysis with bipolar membranes was used to split inorganic and organic salt mixture to their corresponding acids and base. The bipolar electrodialysis process dynamic was monitored with different membrane stack composition. Electrodialysis stack was assembled using following two configurations: CM-BM system with two-compartments and CM-CM-BM system with three-compartment arrangement. The acetic acid, hydrochloric acid and sodium hydroxide were formed from a model solution consisting sodium acetate (0.60 M) and sodium chloride (0.15 M). Two main analytical techniques were selected for analyzing the final products. The first used method was ion chromatography and second method was coupled conductivity and potentiometric titration. The previously mentioned analyses were supplemented by sodium determination using inductively coupled plasma emission spectrometry (ICP-OES). Attention was targeted to the purity of sodium hydroxide in terms of sodium acetate pollution. The target was to determine separation efficiency and conversion rate.
