Study of possible separation of phenylacetic acid from fermentation broth by electrodialysis

  • Original language description

Biologically produced chemicals are widely used in pharmaceutical and cosmetics industry. However, the drawback of biologically produced organic acids and other compounds is their downstream processing. Downstream processing of biochemical products requires recovery of one particular compound from a complex mixture. The downstream concentration and purification is an integral part of production process and significantly contributes to production costs. Downstream processing costs can create up to 90 % of total production costs. Phenylacetic acid (PAA) is a useful compound in pharmaceutical and cosmetics industry. In pharmaceutical industry it is, for example, used for production of penicillin G and diclofenac. In cosmetics industry is phenylacetic acid valuable chemical thanks to its honey-like odor. Goal of this work was to study if it is possible to separate phenylacetic acid from fermentation broth and subsequently purify it by conventional electrodialysis. Phenylacetic acid can form a monovalent anion at alkaline pH (pKa of PAA is 4.31), therefore it is possible to use electrodialysis for its removal from other uncharged compounds.
