Development of ion exchange membrane with antimicrobial additives
Original language description
This diploma thesis is focused on the modification of electrodialysis membranes with antimicrobial additives, the characterization of their basic properties and mutual comparison with the reference (unmodified) sample. Samples with two different commercially available antimicrobial additives were prepared. Specifically, anion-exchange membranes with the additive of Sanitized® BC A 21-41 (SANITIZED AG) in two concentrations of 0.2 and 0.6 wt% (related to the weight of membrane matrix), and membranes with additive of SanaforTM PO 5 (Janssen PMP - Preservation and Material Protection) also in two concentrations of 1 and 4 wt% were prepared and tested. As a reference, anion-exchange membrane of the same composition, however without antimicrobial additives, was used. To characterize newly modified membranes, their mechanical, physicochemical and antibacterial properties, tensile tests, resistance and permselectivity measurements, ion exchange capacity, DNA isolation, and inhibition tests were performed and evaluated. Modification of anion-exchange membrane through additive of SanaforTM PO-5 at a concentration of 4 wt% seems to be a most promising option of performed tests within this diploma study. The membrane modified with this additive exhibited the lowest electrical resistance along with the highest antibacterial activity compared to the reference sample. Moreover, handling with this additive is very easy due to its granular form.
