Finding maximum concentrations for sodium sulphate and sodium chloride using laboratory scale electrodialysis

  • Original language description

Even though reverse osmosis (RO) has been a robust and trusted technology, its application is rather limited when highly concentrated brines are concerned, mainly due to scaling and osmotic pressure. Electrodialysis (ED) on the other hand may present an alternative, as it can produce even super saturated solutions, particularly salts. This work presents laboratory scale experimental data, where the maximum achievable concentration of sodium sulphate and sodium chloride was investigated. All the treated solutions performed without complications, with final concentration reaching nearly 200 g/kg, and neither electric current density nor electricity consumption was sacrificed. We conclude that ED should be conveniently paired with RO, in order to fulfil its potential in near zero-liquid-discharge (ZLD) systems, which are key in the sustainability of modern waste water treatment.
